The murder occurred on the road to Daule, near the Penitentiary of the Litoral of Guayaquil. Cedeño was traveling in a vehicle, whose driver was also wounded.

“Lieutenant Colonel Cedeño was traveling in a silver Ford double-cab pickup truck with his driver when he was shot. The commander died at the scene, while his companion was taken to a nursing home, where he remains hospitalized in critical condition,” the newspaper Extra reported.

After the attack, the Armed Forces requested support to capture those responsible and offered a reward for information on the intellectual and material authors of the murder of Porfirio Cedeño.

The text reads, “Regrettable. This time, armed violence took the live of an Air Force officer. Lieutenant Colonel Porfirio Cedeño had been serving in the Air Force Special Operations Group for almost two years. Previously, he was the principal of the Armed Forces Educational Unit FAE No. 3, in Taura.”

Cedeño was heading to a ceremony in Manta city in which President Daniel Noboa was scheduled to attend. As a result of the events, however, the Ecuadorian president cancelled his participation in that event.

Cedeño, who was in charge of military operations in Duran, one of the most dangerous cantons in Ecuador, had more than 25 years of service in the armed forces. Years ago he was part of the security of then-president Rafael Correa (2007-2017).

“Lieutenant Colonel Porfirio Javier Cedeño Cedeño, from Manabi, is the new victim of the murderous bullets. He was a member of my security for many years and a dear friend… Farewell, dear friend,” Correa said via social media.
